I Came Back For Just a Look

I came back just to take a look,
And thought how time goes past,
Thinking of my childhood days,
How I hoped that they would last.

Time of working in the fields,
With Ma & Pa was fun,
How we'd go to bed at night,
Still hot from the scorching sun.

There are no horses in the pasture,
The fence lies on the ground,
No ducks are splashing in the pond,
Only memories of a familiar sound.

The mound of hay it still remains,
Like golden hair as the sun it shines,
Not affected by the seasons past,
More memories of special times.

The old house now shows its age,
But stands alone with pride,
Keeping a watchful eye on me,
As my heart it pounds inside.

Memories I have many… friend,
Of the broken plough laying on the ground,
Yet, in all this I feel,
The love of family still around.

I am much older now,
Grandpa has long passed on,
Yet the memory of the stories he told,
Give each new day… a song.

The windmill is still standing,
Like a man with no place to go,
Proud as it guards the old homestead,
Show affects of the wind and snow.

The front door & broken porch,
Welcomed friends who once would call,
I see Ma & Pa still sitting,
Watching us kids play ball.

The swallows how they would swoop,
The squirrel jumped from tree to tree,
My faithful dog named Prince,
Keeping his eye on me.

He lies just under the tree,
A pile of rocks to mark the place,
We were so close… him and me,
I feel a tear upon my face.

In the evening the Whippoorwill,
And the owl… he was always there,
Keeping his watchful eyes on us,
In the distance the sound of a bear.

There is still some firewood piled,
I see up against the barn,
Reminds me of the fireside chats,
When grandpa spun his yarn.

The wildflowers around the pond,
They seem to never die,
Always there… time after time,
Like the sun sits in the sky.

Well… I guess it's time to go my friend,
I just came back to take a look,
To capture all the memories,
To record them in my book.
